We care about design and wedding day vibes so much, we’ve curated a collection of fun and stylish furniture and decor rentals and offer a full event design service to transform events and create immersive experiences for you and your guests.

Our rentals collection offers icons of mid-century modern design, handmade furniture, bohemian textures, and fun retro styles to personalize and style your wedding or event. We also offer custom installation services to really personalize your event even more! We’re all about making your day not feel like the same old, same old, so no folding tables and plastic chairs here!

Meet the Team

We’re small, but mighty, and we love good design.
We’re Matthew and Aimee Paquin, the husband and wife team behind Modernly Events!

It’s just us, doing this event rentals thing. Aimee is the founder, designer, buyer, and client manager, while Matthew is the head of logistics, inventory manager, and 75% of the delivery crew. You’ll usually see one or both of us on delivery and event days, though we’re often assisted by a larger crew consisting of our family, friends, and friendors (friends + vendors).

When you reach out to us for a quote or to learn more about our design services, Aimee will respond to your inquiry and meet with you for a consultation. She helps you choose the best rentals and pulls together your event design. Aimee’s also the one with big and crazy ideas for custom installations and handmade furniture.

Matthew is behind the scenes making Aimee’s ideas a reality, whether it’s building a fleet of modern hairpin leg farm tables, re-painting or repairing items, or making sure backdrops are sturdy. On delivery and installation day, he plays Tetris with our rental orders to make sure everything fits and is delivered safe and sound.

Our Story

For those curious about how we got our start in the rentals biz.
Aimee founded Modernly Events in 2013, so here’s our story in her words:

I love good design – interior, graphic, furniture, and events. When Matthew and I were planning our September 2012 wedding, we struggled to find rentals options that fit the eclectic and retro chic style we wanted. Many of the available options felt too corporate or sometimes dated. For that same reason, it took us a long time to choose our venue, the Ford Piquette Plant, and once we did choose, we knew we wanted to transform it in a way that felt like us. So, naturally, I went about collecting or DIY-ing much of our wedding decor, even thrifting a vintage sofa and using our own furniture for a lounge area. Once our wedding was over, and with a little push from our wedding photographer, I started playing with the idea of my own wedding business, whether as an event planner, specialty or vintage rentals company, or some combination of both. The compliments we received from our guests, plus publications in Grey Likes Weddings and The Knot Michigan, further validated that maybe I had what it would take to start a wedding business.

I officially founded Modernly Events in spring 2013, choosing the name Modernly at the end of an hour-long naming session with my best friend. Modernly felt like the right expression of my design inclination and aesthetic of putting a modern spin on vintage ideas. At that time, I was about 4 years into my career as an architectural historian and consultant, something I had gone to graduate school for and that I enjoyed doing. While continuing to work full-time as an architectural historian, I explored my love of weddings and good design over the next couple years and used Modernly Events as a creative outlet for a mostly technical, writing-based career. I took a series of event planning courses through my local community college, booked several day-of coordination weddings, and continued to collect mostly vintage pieces of furniture and decor, which began to take over my house! I also planned my first styled shoot in spring 2014 for a workshop hosted by our wedding photographer. Between the styled shoot preparations and completing those day-of coordination jobs, I realized my heart was in event design and not the logistics and management of being a wedding planner!

I took a break in 2015 to focus on being a first-time mom to our daughter, Cora, and learning to balance mom life, full-time architectural historian life, and life in general. I wasn’t sure how Modernly would or could fit into all of that. A well-timed referral from our wedding photographer (seriously, major shoutout to Mary Wyar Photography for encouraging me to pursue this) and acceptance as a vendor into the Rock Sugar Alternative Wedding Show in 2016, kicked off what I consider the true beginning of Modernly Events as it exists today.

Over the last two years, Modernly Events has found its niche in the Detroit area providing eclectic event rentals and event design to elevate and transform weddings in a modern, stylish, and fun way.
